Prague - On Wednesday, December 29th, interested parties can visit the transport hall of the National Technical Museum (NTM) for the first time, featuring a new exhibition on the history of transport. The date when the building will be fully opened to the public after four years of reconstruction is not yet known. The newly appointed General Director of NTM, Karel Ksandr, will announce it at the beginning of next week.

"On this occasion, I will present to journalists the composition of the new scientific council of the museum and the new concept," said Ksandr today to ČTK. He took up his position on December 1 after being appointed by Culture Minister Jiří Besser (for TOP 09) in mid-November to lead this institution. He replaced Horymír Kubíček, against whom the ministry filed a criminal complaint based on audit results. His economic deputy, Oldřich Rambousek, was similarly affected.
Ksandr, who was a deputy and curator at the National Museum, had previously worked at NTM five years ago; he does not consider it a disadvantage or an advantage. "It makes my job easier in that I know the museum quite well, I am familiar with its operations and the structure of its collections. Not all staff members may be pleased about this," he told ČTK after his appointment. He did not hide that he is preparing a fundamental reorganization, which he proposed in his application for this position. He wants to discuss it with the newly appointed scientific council and the museum's professional staff.
The new director's immediate task is to make the museum accessible again after its four-year reconstruction. He plans to gradually open completed exhibitions and considers it important to attract visitors back to Letná.
According to information from NTM's website, visitors can look forward to authentic historic automobiles and aircraft in the transport hall or a labyrinth of the finest in the exhibition of architecture, construction, and design. In another hall, which evokes the atmosphere of a printing house, they will be able to observe the technical development of printing from the invention of the printing press to the present day. In a period photographic studio with a glass ceiling, they will become acquainted with unique devices from the early days of photography.
Another exhibition will briefly present one hundred years of the National Technical Museum's activities and one of the oldest sciences, astronomy. The mining and metallurgy department plans to reconstruct a replica of a metal and coal mine. There will also be an exhibition dedicated to domestic technology featuring everyday items from various historical periods. "From Watt to megawatt" will be the name of a space discussing the development of driving machines, which played a crucial role in the emergence of the industrial revolution. This section is also expected to be completed next year.
