Pardubice - The modernization of the Pardubice railway junction, which is set to be completed in 2023, will smoothly transition into the overall restoration of the station building. The building is listed as a cultural monument, and it is necessary to respect the copyright of the heir of the original architectural design. This was stated today by Jiří Svoboda, the general director of the Railway Administration.
"We are in the final stages of preparing the project in coordination with architects and the copyright holder Miroslav Řepa. There is currently a discussion about where everything should be and what we might still adjust. Once the demanding construction of the platforms, including elevators and escalators, is finished, we will tackle the station building in 2023,” said Svoboda.
The exterior of the building will undergo a complete renewal, including new windows and doors, a roof, and a façade that respects the original ceramic cladding. Heritage protectors will oversee everything. The interiors will be restored to their original state as much as possible, although this will be subject to the requirements for future use.
Public spaces in the building will be equipped with wi-fi, a modernization of the passenger information system, video surveillance, and an alarm system is underway. Commercial and gastronomic services in the departure hall will be expanded.
The control rooms and administrative spaces for the railway operator and carrier will also undergo a complete reconstruction. An automatic parking system is designed for the operational needs of the building. Three escalators will be added to each of the staircases leading to the underpasses, totaling six, as well as elevators for barrier-free access to all parts of the building, including sanitary facilities. The service offerings will be expanded to include bike boxes with the option to charge electric bikes.
The Pardubice station, built in the style of functionalism, was designed by Karel Řepa together with Josef Danda and Karel Kalvoda in the late 1940s. Construction work continued until 1958.
