Brno - The municipal district of Brno-střed today ceremoniously opened a new park with a café and public toilets at Mendlovo náměstí. The cost of 13 million was covered by the city, said Brno-střed councilor Petr Bořecký (ANO) to ČTK. The square is a transfer hub for public transport. The park, with benches, trees, and a hop garden, can serve as a waiting area as well as a spot for relaxation. The entire square is expected to undergo reconstruction in the future.

Work began earlier this year. The space was previously unused. "We have managed to cultivate and revitalize a place that has been neglected for many years. No one has taken care of it for more than 50 years, resulting in an unsightly area, despite the lack of relaxation and park spaces in the vicinity," Bořecký stated.

The project included adjustments to paths, planting greenery, installing lighting, benches, trash bins, and a pergola with hops, reminiscent of the nearby brewery. A new feature of the square is a container café and public toilets, which had been lacking in the area. The toilets are barrier-free and accessible for free, but a token for entry must be requested from the café staff. The café and restrooms will be open from Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

According to the mayor of Brno-střed, Martin Landa (elected for Žít Brno), this is the first step towards a comprehensive reconstruction of the entire Mendlovo náměstí. "The next step is the ongoing urban-architectural competition. Its aim is to create a fully functional cohesive public space that will lead to the calming of the entire locality," Landa stated.

The opening was also attended by the mayor of Brno, Petr Vokřál (ANO). "Mendlovo náměstí was an unsightly place and I am glad that it is starting to change. Tens of thousands of people pass through this traffic hub daily, and now there is a café, restrooms, and a park for them," Vokřál added.
