Brno - Brno wants to calm the tense traffic situation at Mendlovo náměstí in the coming years. The public transport system is overly mixed with cars and pedestrians there. Michal Sedláček, director of the Brno City Architect's Office, told journalists today that private car traffic should be separated from public transport. A park should also be created in the square. However, according to Sedláček, the solution involves several years of work and amounts to hundreds of millions of crowns.

Brno announced a competition for the transformation of the square, addressing seven design studios. The winners are Brno architects Miroslav Palaščák and Michal Poláš. According to their proposal, the southern part of the square should serve public transport and transfers from trolleybuses to trams, while the northern part of the square near the monastery would be designated for private car traffic, with the possibility of two-way traffic on Veletržní Street also being considered.

Currently, the situation is that cars follow the same route as trolleybuses, passing tram tracks, and all drivers must often be extremely cautious due to pedestrians who cross among the public transport lines. Architect and municipal representative of the Brno-střed district, Petr Bořecký (ANO), told journalists that the left side of the square should serve as a park for people to meet, while the right side would be for traffic and transfer hubs.

Until recently, Mendlovo náměstí was more of a transfer hub with little space for greenery. The Brno-střed district therefore created a small park on the left side of the square for 13 million, which includes a café and public toilets. It was opened in the summer. Palaščák and Poláš want to enlarge the park to provide more space for leisure and gatherings.
