Brno - The Brno city hall will organize a debate with the public regarding the planned reconstruction of Mendlovo Square. Citizens' proposals will be evaluated and integrated into the necessary changes to the spatial plan, said the mayor's deputy Martin Ander (SZ) today to ČTK. The repair will affect network distribution, tram tracks, roads, as well as public spaces. According to Ander, the estimated costs exceed 100 million crowns. The work could begin in three to four years, he added.

The public debate with citizens will take place on Monday at 5:30 PM at the Starobrno Brewery on Mendlovo Square. "We will see the entire area and discuss people's demands. We will familiarize the public with all currently processed plans and also gather citizens' comments," said Ander.
According to him, in the past the city did not communicate much with people regarding spatial planning. The city hall, under previous leadership, prepared a significant update of the spatial plan over several years, against which many people protested. Although it was approved by the councilors last June, the court annulled it this January due to the incomprehensibility of some changes. "With this meeting, we want to show people that the way of communication is changing and we will discuss changes in the spatial plan with them," said Ander.
The city plans several directions for the reconstruction of Mendlovo Square. "We need to address the repair of water and other network distributions. The sewer is a hundred years old, and since we will be digging in the area, it would be good to address this area," informed Ander. Another part of the repairs will concern changes to the routing of tram lines. The city’s goal is to simplify public transport. Trams and trolleybuses pass through Mendlovo Square, and for unfamiliar passengers, navigating the connections is complicated. "We will also be repairing the roads and plan to enhance the public space," added Ander.
Currently, he says, the costs of construction cannot be precisely quantified, but they will certainly exceed 100 million crowns. "We will also be applying for a subsidy. However, we first need to process people's comments, make changes to the spatial plan, and develop a project," Ander concluded.
