Brno – The Museum of the City of Brno will be led by Zbyněk Šolc, replacing Pavel Ciprian, who served as director for more than 17 years. Šolc was appointed by the City Council of Brno in accordance with the proposal of the selection committee and will take office on August 1. In recent years, Šolc has served as the deputy mayor of Královo Pole for ODS and also led the National Centre for Theatre and Dance in Valtice in the Břeclav region.
The Museum of the City of Brno manages Špilberk Castle, the Tugendhat Villa, the Měnín Gate, and recently also the Arnold Villa. Eight candidates competed for the director position, including current head of the Tugendhat Villa, Iveta Černá, and KDU-ČSL MP Jiří Mihola.
Šolc impressed the committee with his concept. "His intention for the museum to be a modern memory institution popularizing science and research, a key player in the creative scene of Brno, and a top tourist and educational destination, was convincingly supported by arguments," said cultural councilor Marek Fišer (Pirates), who was also the chairman of the selection committee.
Šolc graduated in social sciences at Masaryk University and the University of Jan Amos Comenius. In the past, he has also worked as an assistant to a senator, director of a section at the Ministry of Transport, and director of the Association of Secondary School Clubs of the Czech Republic. At the museum, he will also focus on the internal functioning of the organization.
"The basic idea is to give employees space for creative thinking and to utilize their professional potential. Therefore, I also plan to create temporary project teams. On the other hand, there will be a solid structure for all administrative and technical support, which provides the necessary assistance," said Šolc.
Ciprian will end his term on July 31 and did not participate in the selection process. Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS) thanked him for his long-term care of Špilberk and other monuments. "When you look at old photographs or search for information about the continuous reconstruction of Špilberk, you can see how much work went into it," said Vaňková.
