Brno – A new bridge over the Svitava River in Brno, which is estimated to cost more than 220 million crowns, will be designed by architects from the London studio William Matthews Associates. The Brno city council today confirmed the decision of the expert jury that selected the studio from seven competitive proposals. The bridge, which will be 85 meters long and 30 meters wide, is expected to be built within the next two to three years between the former Zbrojovka complex and the Zetor Motor Plant.

All proposals from the competition organized by the Brno City Architect's Office will be exhibited at the turn of April and May in the Industra café, which is part of the Zbrojovka complex. "The bridge will allow public transport to pass in two lanes and offer another two to car drivers. Separate bike lanes and pedestrian spaces will be added on both sides," said Vaňková. She added that the city will coordinate the project with two stages of flood protection against high water, which are to be developed by 2025.

City architect Michal Sedláček stated that no new bridge has been built in Brno for decades. "It's great that an architectural competition was announced for its design. In our evaluation, we particularly appreciated the slender steel structure of the bridge and the generous flood park expanding the riverbank on both sides. The solution is simple, spatially generous, flexible, sufficiently accessible for various types of movement for visitors, and has great potential to serve as a biocorridor," said Sedláček, who was a member of the expert jury.
