Cheb - The city of Cheb wants to buy the building of the former university dormitories of the West Bohemian University. The city will pay 25.8 million crowns for the so-called blue tower, as the building is referred to in Cheb. However, the city council must make the decision, said Cheb mayor Petr Navrátil (ČSSD) to reporters today.

"The city council will approve the purchase of the blue tower this week. Then contracts will be signed, and the transfer could take place during the summer. From September, we would like to rent it to the Karlovy Vary Region, which will be renovating a seniors' home in Skalka and would like to place clients in the building during the reconstruction,"
Navrátil stated.

The region is expected to rent the building for one to one and a half years. Meanwhile, the city wants to clarify what use it will find for the building. It should remain a residential building but will be adapted to specific needs, such as being a dormitory for workers in the Cheb industrial park, for starter apartments, and so on.

The dormitories of the Faculty of Economics at the West Bohemian University have had little use in recent years. Most students chose to live in rented apartments. The university also built several apartments directly at the faculty's headquarters.

The blue tower was originally a regular apartment building that the university renovated with the help of a non-repayable loan from the city for the purposes of the dormitories. The building got its local name due to the bright blue color of its facade.
