Cheb - The city of Cheb will convert the former university dormitory into small apartments. The reconstruction of the so-called blue tower, which the city purchased from the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, is expected to cost about ten million crowns, said Cheb Mayor Antonín Jalovec (VPM) to ČTK.

According to him, businesses in the industrial zone were interested in transforming the blue tower into a hostel. "Which we resolutely rejected," he stated. "So we decided to go the route of converting the building into a classic apartment building with 56 apartments and non-residential space. Project documentation has been commissioned, which should be completed by the end of the year. At the beginning of 2018, reconstruction could begin," added Jalovec.

The building would mainly consist of highly sought-after one and two-room apartments with a kitchenette suitable for both young families and seniors. The rent would be determined in the same way as in other city apartments, and according to Jalovec, the investment in the reconstruction should soon pay off.

The city purchased the building for 25.8 million crowns when the university was reducing the dormitory's operations due to declining interest and offered the building for sale. Originally, it was supposed to be used by the Karlovy Vary Region as temporary accommodation for clients from the Skalka Senior Home, which is being reconstructed. However, it was eventually found that the building would not meet fire regulations.
