Cheb - The city of Cheb has purchased the former university dormitories from the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. The so-called blue tower was acquired for 25.8 million crowns. It is now considering options for how to use the building, which has served more as a hostel in recent years, said Cheb mayor Petr Navrátil (ČSSD) to ČTK today. "One of the options would be to use the former dormitories as accommodation for workers in the industrial park. The building could also serve to accommodate athletes. We are also considering whether the city will operate it itself or lease it to someone, whether a municipal or private company," Navrátil stated. The main goal, however, is to prevent the tower from becoming a social hostel for non-adaptable individuals.
Initially, the city planned to lease the former dormitories for a year and a half to the Karlovy Vary Region, which wanted to accommodate its clients here during the reconstruction of the senior home in the Skalka housing estate in Cheb. However, it turned out that fire regulations for social facilities are stricter than those for dormitory-type accommodations, and moving may therefore not be possible.
The city signed the contract with the university in July and effectively took over the property in September. The Cheb dormitory on Dyleňská Street offered up to 204 beds in double and single rooms, as well as four beds in accessible rooms. However, interest in accommodation from students of the Cheb Faculty of Economics at the University of West Bohemia gradually decreased, and recently, the dormitories served more as a regular hostel.
