Prague - Residents of Žižkov will be able to decide on the future of the popular green hill Parukářka in a referendum. The council of the municipality approved the referendum. It will take place at the beginning of October alongside the local elections, as reported by ČTK from the resolution.

"Parukářka - a natural park in the center of Prague 3, should be preserved for future generations in such a way that it would be almost impossible to change it into land for commercial use," said mayor Vladislava Hujová (TOP 09). Public voting is meant to dispel discussions and concerns of citizens about the development of this area. "We consider the protection of Parukářka for greenery, sports, and recreation to be so important that we are letting citizens vote on it," said deputy mayor Ondřej Rut (ŽnS).
The referendum aims to clarify the future use of the Parukářka area and establish boundaries within which development will no longer be permitted. If participation in the referendum exceeds 35 percent, the results will be binding for the future political representation resulting from the autumn elections.
In the past, a complex of high-rise buildings grew next to the park under strange circumstances. Some Žižkov politicians from the past coalition grouping ODS and TOP 09 sought a change in the zoning plan that would allow the developer to continue building a luxury residential district. Local residents protested against this and even compiled a petition. The city council ultimately halted the plan.
