Liberec - The Liberec Region is looking for a contractor for the construction of a waterfront by the regional office. Construction work, which is estimated to cost about 132 million crowns, is expected to begin later this autumn. This was stated today by Deputy Governor Zbyněk Miklík (Pirates). The project is part of a billion-crown initiative to develop the lower center of Liberec, which started in 2014 when the region bought buildings and land adjacent to its headquarters from VÚTS (formerly the Research Institute of Textile Machines).

The construction of the waterfront by the Lužická Nisa River and the development of the area around the regional headquarters follows the first phase, which includes a parking garage for 244 cars, expected to be completed in November. "It will be more architecturally demanding, as the construction of both the parking garage and the waterfront will occur concurrently this autumn," added the governor's deputy. Motorists should expect complications, as construction will limit parking space. The deadline for submitting bids ends on August 14. "The winner will have 330 days to complete the construction," Miklík added.

The area around the regional office is set to transform into a recreational zone with access to the Lužická Nisa River. "The project will include its bridging, which will allow a dignified entrance to the regional office without unnecessary detours. At the same time, it fulfills the vision of the author of the regional skyscraper, Zdeněk Plesník, whose project included the construction of the bridge," said Governor Martin Půta (Mayors for the Liberec Region). The entrance to the regional building will also undergo changes, with the access stairs being made longer.

The neglected park will also be revitalized, with the addition of a children's playground and a water feature. "The only construction that is 'popping up from the ground' is a refreshment stand. It’s a wooden structure with a public toilet clad in corrugated metal. The main thing, however, is the descent to the Nisa, which was the most challenging part of the preparation. It will allow visitors to walk down to the river and wet their feet in the water. A tree will be planted there to create a pleasant climate," said David Pavlišta, one of the project's co-authors from the studio re: architekti.

The construction in the Liberec Region will also connect with a portion of the city of Liberec. "We will cultivate the path on the left side from the perspective of the river flow. We will remove the parking lot, turning it into a green area that will be part of the adjacent park. The Odra-Nisa bike path is also crucial for us," said Deputy Mayor Jiří Janďourek (Mayors for the Liberec Region). According to him, a promenade with seating and a garden of the Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Administration will be created on the left bank, connecting to the children's playground. The city phase, however, is still in preparation.

The Liberec Region began the reclamation of this part of the city in 2014 when it purchased the area and buildings covering more than 11,000 square meters around its headquarters from VÚTS for 125 million crowns. The region has already invested another half a billion crowns into the conversion of the former administrative building into the European House and the renovation of the former workshops, which now house a business incubator and an archive, among other things. The parking garage and waterfront will cost the region more than 380 million crowns, with part of the costs covered by European grants.
