ŽĎÁR NAD SÁZAVOU - This year, landscaping modifications at Green Mountain in Žďár nad Sázavou, where the Church of St. John of Nepomuk, a UNESCO heritage site, stands, will be completed. According to the project, another 280 trees will be cut down by March, new trees will be planted, and pathways will be built around its perimeter, where tourists will have access to benches, informational signs, and trash cans, said the mayor of the city, Jaromír Brychta (ODS), to ČTK today. According to the project, a total of 500 trees aged between one hundred and one hundred thirty years will be cut down at Green Mountain. The cleared greenery will be replaced by dozens of new trees so that the landmark is visible from afar, as it was in previous centuries, the mayor pointed out. About two-thirds of the mountain will see the construction of approximately 560 meters of stone path and 270 meters of path made of mineral concrete this year. Lawns will be established on 3,000 square meters. Self-seeded trees were removed from a total of 10,000 square meters, he summarized. Green Mountain was added to the UNESCO heritage list 12 years ago, with the lands around the church owned by Radslav Kinský. The city exchanged them for others years ago to begin modifications to the surroundings. However, the state takes care of the landmark itself. About 60 million crowns have been spent on the reconstruction of the cloisters surrounding the church. After an extensive survey, the restoration of the church's interiors began. However, funding for this is slow, approximately two million crowns annually. Thus, according to the mayor, scaffolding could remain in the church for up to 15 years. First, the city built a new cemetery and ceremonial hall to relocate graves from the church site. This year, an additional 13.5 million will be spent on its expansion. The city allocated ten million for the reconstruction of the adjacent Sychrova Street leading to the landmark, with further funds dedicated to the restoration of access paths along the Convent Pond. Barrier-free paths, new lighting, and parking spaces for the disabled next to the church have been established. A renovated staircase lined with a new row of trees leads to the landmark.
