Jičín - The wooden roof trusses of Masarykova Theater in Jičín are in a state of emergency due to insect infestation and wood-destroying fungi. Under heavier loads, such as snow, they could collapse. The town hall has therefore started preparing static reinforcement of the trusses. This was announced today by city spokesman Jan Jireš. The firm MEPRO, which is preparing documentation for the overall reconstruction of the theater for the city, discovered the poor condition of the trusses.

According to the designers, the worst condition is the trusses above the stage. "The designers warned that a collapse of the structure cannot be ruled out under heavier loads on the roof. They unequivocally recommended carrying out temporary static reinforcement before winter," Jireš stated. Therefore, the city council approved MEPRO's offer to develop a project for the static securing of the trusses and the removal of the emergency condition for 95,500 crowns without VAT.

The firm is expected to present the documentation for securing the trusses in September. "Subsequently, a specialized company will be approached to carry out the work. During this time, the theater will be closed," Jireš noted. He stated that without static reinforcement, at least the stage would have to be permanently closed for safety reasons.

The theater, built at the end of the 19th century, was purchased by the city in 2016 from the Sokol Physical Education Union. By processing the project, the town hall began a multi-year process of costly reconstruction of the building this year. Work on the documentation is expected to last until 2020. The start of the actual repairs will be decided by the council emerging from the October municipal elections.

Masarykova Theater, located on the pedestrian zone in Husova Street, is a place of cultural and social life in the town of Jičín, which has sixteen thousand inhabitants. It hosts performances, concerts, balls, dance classes, exhibitions, and seminars.

Builders are expected to reconstruct the roof, facade, installations, heating, interiors, and install air conditioning in the theater. The estimated costs for the theater's repairs are in the tens of millions of crowns, with the main burden of financing falling on the city. The Sokol members, who remain minority owners of the property, will also partially contribute to the costs.

Jičín purchased the theater from the Sokol members after complicated negotiations in June 2016 for 18.5 million crowns. This opened the way for the repair of the building, as the Sokol members would not have the funds for the repairs themselves.
