Karlovy Vary - The Department of Heritage Care of the Karlovy Vary City Hall has proposed heritage protection for the building number 22 on Zámecký vrch Street. The city hall aims to promote the preservation of this significant structure in the spa part of the city. The deteriorating building is otherwise at risk of demolition. The proposal to declare the building a cultural monument was sent to the Ministry of Culture at the beginning of July. This was reported today by Helena Kyselá, spokesperson for the Karlovy Vary City Hall. "The house at Zámecký vrch 22 dates from the 19th century and in the past housed, among other things, the management of the Karlovy Vary Museum. According to conservationists, it deserves heritage protection primarily because it is an almost untouched object from the Empire period, additionally located in a prominent place above the Mill Colonnade in the center of the spa zone of Karlovy Vary," stated Kyselá. The house, which is not being used by its current owner, was recently temporarily secured for static safety. It is also deteriorating due to insufficient maintenance. The building was not reconstructed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and thus retains the authentic historical character of the city's spa center. According to conservationists, its load-bearing structures and material authenticity are unique; for instance, original tiled stoves and window fillings have been preserved. "The house also has undeniable significance for urban planning in the very heart of the spa and for distant views. Therefore, we welcome the initiative of the conservationists and fully support it," said Jiří Klsák (KOA), Deputy Mayor on behalf of the city leadership. Karlovy Vary recently supported the registration of the Thermal Hotel as a cultural monument as well. The city was concerned about insensitive construction interventions.
