Brno – The former army canteen on Žižková street in the Brno-střed district will be demolished, and a space for relaxation will be created in its place. The Brno city council has already recommended that the city assembly approve the inclusion of this project in the capital expenditure budget. This was stated in a press release by Anna Dudková from the city hall press center. The costs for the site modification are approximately 11 million crowns.
Public greenery is planned to be planted on the site of the dilapidated buildings, where people will be able to spend their free time, and furniture will also be added.
"The brownfield site Kadetka Žižkova contains the building of a former military kitchen and canteen, which has not been used for over 30 years. Its technical condition has been affected by a fire in the past, and it is thus designated for demolition. The surroundings of the building are neglected, overgrown with scrub vegetation, and there is also a large amount of litter. The space definitely deserves revitalization. Thanks to the project, it will serve the residents of Brno, and a pleasant nook with greenery will be created here," said Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS).
The estimated total costs are more than 11 million crowns, with over five million coming from a grant from the Ministry for Regional Development. "The proposed budget measure, which will be decided by the city assembly, includes the transfer of more than three million crowns from the Brno-střed municipality to ensure the project's implementation," said Deputy Mayor Robert Kerndl (ODS). Work is expected to begin this year.
The dilapidated building is located between two educational institutions, namely the Faculty of Civil Engineering at VUT and the Matyáš Lerch Gymnasium. Along with the land, it was transferred to the statutory city of Brno by the Czech Army in the 1990s.
