Brno - Brno will expand accommodation options for seniors who want to live near rehabilitation and other services. Two new buildings with social care services will be constructed for them. These will be built on city-owned plots in gaps on Mlýnská and Křídlovická streets. The council approved the construction plan today. Thus, the city continues its effort to expand housing options for seniors, said Deputy Mayor Oliver Pospíšil (ČSSD) to reporters today.
In each building, there will be around 20 apartments plus communal spaces on the ground floor. The city hall estimates the cost of one building at 30 million crowns. The approval of the investment plan will allow for the selection of a designer, the commissioning of a study, and additional steps, said Pospíšil. The city intends to finance the constructions from the housing development fund, which receives income from apartment privatization. If project planning and any tenders go smoothly, the houses could be ready for occupancy by the end of 2013, according to Pospíšil.
There is a shortage of places in similar facilities in Brno. Apartments in buildings with social care are sought after by some seniors. Tenants appreciate that they pay rent and do not have to worry at all about housing, cleaning, and other matters. Moreover, the buildings are designed with older residents in mind, so elevators are a given. People can usually order lunch deliveries and laundry services, and rehabilitation and medical services are often available on the ground floor.
The Deputy Mayor emphasized that the city is continuously working on several similar projects. At the beginning of the year, the city hall opened a new building with social care services in the district of Komín, where senior housing was created by converting a kindergarten that had not been used for ten years. Another building with social care services is being developed in the district of Řečkovice, from the rough construction of a self-service grocery store built in the late 80s. "Renovation of the Juventus youth home into a social care house and starter apartments is about to be launched," Pospíšil noted. The building is located in the district of Kohoutovice.
