Brno - Brno plans to expand the Svratka River in two sections for more than one billion crowns. It will include flood protection measures, as well as space for bike paths, walking trails, ponds, and wetlands. Martin Ander (Green Party), the mayor's deputy, said this to journalists. The work will build on other sections that the city is already preparing on the Svratka.

The council approved the preparation of two more sections. One starts at the viaduct in Uhelná Street and continues to the railway bridge of the Přerov line. On the left bank of the river, it covers the area known as the Southern District. The estimated costs are 560 million crowns.

The second section is in the Brno-South district. It starts with the bridge in Sokolová Street and ends at the confluence of the Svratka with Leskavá. The estimated costs exceed 460 million crowns. "We link the construction of essential flood protection for Brno with the expansion of the riverbed and its accessibility for recreational and leisure use, such as for the construction of bike paths and new walking trails, as well as natural elements like ponds and wetlands," Ander stated.

The investment plan aims at greater capacity of the current riverbed by lowering the banks and building set-back earthen embankments, sometimes even reinforced concrete walls. The existing bike paths will be transferred to the lowered banks, and additional ones will be created. Some of the work will take place on city-owned land, and some on private land, where the city will seek exchange or purchase. It estimates costs around 100 million crowns for this.

The city is already preparing several projects for flood protection measures and accessibility of the Svratka banks. They concern, for example, sections from the Riviéra swimming pool to the bridge on Uhelná Street or the area of the former Zbrojovka and Zetor motor factory.
