After two years of intensive preparations, a creative hub called KUMST will open in Brno on Údolní street. It will offer support for creatives that has been missing in Brno so far. Its goal is to connect professionals across creative industries, develop their ability to make a living through creation, and thereby support other sectors as well. It will be located at Údolní street number 19, where FAVU VUT had studios until 2016. “If the construction work goes according to plan, we should open the spaces in September, at the latest in October,” says Zdeňka Kujová, who has been in charge of the entire project at the innovation agency JIC since 2016.

The intention to build a center for creative and cultural industries in Brno originated more than ten years ago. A study prepared by JIC in 2014 subsequently showed that over 20,000 people work in cultural and creative industries within Brno's companies. “This includes designers, architectural studios, publishing houses, advertising agencies, game developers, and the music industry,” clarifies Zdeňka Kujová from JIC, pointing out that the annual turnover of the mentioned companies was 24 billion crowns according to the study at that time. According to survey results from the Creative Vouchers Brno program, the creative industries significantly support the development of other sectors. In the past, councilors decided to green-light the creative center project and find a suitable location for it. The spaces of the former Káznice on Cejl became that location, but several years of discussions and delays eventually led to the proposal for a pilot project of the creative hub in a building that was built in 1929 by the German Technical University according to the design of Vincenze Baier. “Since 2016, when FAVU vacated its spaces, the building has been empty. That’s why we proposed to VUT, which owns the building, that we could use the spaces for the pilot operation of the creative hub,” adds Kujová from the JIC agency.

According to the director of JIC, Petr Chládek, KUMST will provide creatives with the space that is currently lacking in Brno. Creatives will be able to rent a place in coworking, a studio, or an office, and community spaces will be planned for educational and community events or art openings, with experienced consultants available for creatives. “JIC supports business owners to succeed in the entrepreneurial world - whether they are young people at the very beginning or owners of established companies dealing with specific situations in their businesses. In a similar way, we want to support professionals from creative industries at KUMST. So they can continue to create freely, earn a good living, and bring added value to others,” explains the main purpose of the hub, Petr Chládek.
The hub's opening to the public is planned for the autumn. “We decided to postpone the grand opening to next year due to the current situation. However, no one will miss the opening. At the beginning of October, there will be an open week, and we are considering joining the September Brno Design Days with KUMST,” specifies Kujová. According to her, it will primarily depend on the progress of the construction work, which is currently running on schedule.
