Brno - More than 200 people visited the crematorium at the Brno central cemetery today, where an open house was held. It was organized in connection with this year's 80th anniversary of its establishment. The building is considered a valuable example of functionalist architecture. In total, over 303,000 ceremonies have already been held there. Sometimes there are up to 16 per day, said Zdeněk Kolář, the director of the crematorium, to ČTK.
The crematorium was built between 1926 and 1930. There were long discussions about where it should actually be located. Among the options was also the area beneath Špilberk Castle. In the end, however, a plot of land on an elevation above the Brno central cemetery was chosen.
The facility was designed by the renowned architect Arnošt Wiesner. Experts particularly appreciate that this structure has not only a modern design but also a majestic appearance.
The last open days were held, according to Kolář, five years ago. Compared to that event, twice as many people came to the crematorium today. "We also showed them the technological part of the building, including the actual cremation of the coffin," the director added.
He added that this year the crematorium is expecting a reconstruction of the skylight, which brightens the ceremonial hall. Despite the high demands, the work will be carried out in such a way that it does not disrupt the mourning ceremonies.
