"Just like people, buildings are subject to time," said Mayor Onderka.
Brno - The Brno city hall repaired the crematorium and its surroundings for almost 40 million crowns and built new pavilions with commercial spaces neighboring it. The work took less than a year. The renovation is intended to bring dignity to the memorial site and greater comfort to the bereaved, said Brno Mayor Roman Onderka (ČSSD) to ČTK today. "The Central Cemetery is the largest and most important cemetery in Brno. Its majesty was enhanced in the 1920s by the highly valued Wiesner Crematorium. But just like people, buildings are subject to time," said Onderka. According to him, the renovation has restored the building's original beauty and also improved and modernized it. All flat roofs of the crematorium have been repaired, and the ceremonial hall and vestibule have received air conditioning. "The interiors of the lounges for the bereaved and the rooms for displaying the deceased have been updated," informed Brno city hall spokeswoman Soňa Haluzová. According to her, the renovation also affected the facilities for employees and the area where cooling devices for storing the deceased are located. The columbarium has also been renovated. A new single-story pavilion has been created, which houses a flower shop combined with refreshments and a stone shop. "We have also renovated the parking lot, where an electrically operated gate with barriers has been created," Haluzová added. At the entrance to the service yard, there is another new pavilion, where there is a contact point for the bereaved. "The funeral and cemetery services of the city of Brno provide complete memorial services there, including arranging a ceremony or picking up the urn with the ashes of the deceased," the spokeswoman added.
