Vienna/Prague - The eccentric Austrian architect, graphic designer, and painter Friedensreich Hundertwasser would have celebrated his eightieth birthday on December 15. As a painter, he was renowned for his colorful paintings, in which he combined abstract and concrete elements into a decorative whole with a central motif of the spiral as a symbol of harmony and infinity.

As an architect, he was known for absolutely rejecting straight lines. He called it the devil's tool and argued that nothing like that exists in nature. In one of his manifestos, he even demanded that straight lines be banned.
His buildings are characterized by diversity, colorfulness, and irregularity. They must not lack turrets, domes, mosaics, ceramic elements, irregularly scattered windows of various sizes, and diverse roofs. Based on his visions, around 200 smaller or larger objects were built, primarily in Austria and Germany. The most famous is undoubtedly the Hundertwasser-Krawina House in Vienna, which he designed together with his colleague Josef Krawina. Friedensreich Hundertwasser, "remover of architectural grayness," died of a heart attack in February 2000 while sailing from New Zealand to Europe aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2.
