Swimming pools in Shanghai from gmp

The penultimate discipline on the program of the fourteenth World Swimming Championships (1500 meters freestyle) prepared for Sunday afternoon the announced world record by Sun Yang. Those who missed the fabulous harmony of the Chinese swimmer with the water element can only regret it, but in which venues did the athletes actually compete in the past two weeks?
Due to the Shanghai Championships, a completely new sports center SOSC (Shanghai Oriental Sports Center) was opened, designed by the German architects gmp von Gerkan, Marg und Partner, engineers Schlaich Bergermann und Partner, Arup, and landscape architects WES & Partner. The speed of this team was tested last year during the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. In China, the architects had less than two and a half years after the competition in 2008 to design and complete the entire sports complex on polluted land of the former industrial area along the Huangpu River. The entire complex, which includes a media center and three stadiums (a hall stadium, an indoor swimming pool, and an outdoor swimming pool), is situated on a shared platform hovering above the surface of an artificial lake. The water element served the architects as a connecting factor between the new structures and the emerging park. Despite different shapes, all three stadiums use the same materials and construction principles – a steel structure covered with perforated aluminum panels resembling stretched sails. The steel roof of the main stadium spans 170 meters. The structure of the indoor swimming hall covers a total area of 210 x 120 meters. The media center is located in the northern part of the complex and also includes a gym, conference spaces, a medical center, VIP lounges, and offices.
