In the northern part of Georgia, approximately 250 km from Tbilisi, lies the city of Mestia, where, in late December of last year, a glass control tower designed by the German architect Jürgen Mayer H. was added to its remarkable medieval Svan towers. His massive structure with curved ends blends in with the surrounding Caucasian houses. Jürgen Mayer H. attempted to bring the dimensions closer to his medieval brothers located within sight of the control tower. The new terminal was built by a local company in just three months. The floor plan resembles a lying letter Y, with its ends reaching up towards the sky. The reinforced concrete structure is clad in dark glass. The waiting hall has been serving everyone who arrived, whether for the local ski slopes or UNESCO monuments, since the Christmas holidays. The project is part of a larger initiative to develop the city's infrastructure. President Mikheil Saakashvili plans, in addition to the airport, to connect northwestern Georgia with a new railway and highway, so that tourists can revitalize this forgotten region.
