Danish architecture has left an indelible mark. The Sydney Opera House and the Grand Arch in Paris are architectural gems that exemplify this. Danish architecture sets trends even in this millennium. Come and see for yourself from July 29 to August 31, 2014, at the Gallery of Architecture in Brno that architecture and design mean much more to Danes than just bricks and mortar!
Danish architecture has been synonymous with beautiful and innovative design for many years. Continuing the legacy of Arne Jacobsen, a leading figure in Danish modernism and the creator of famous design chairs with characteristic names like "Swan" and "Egg," Denmark achieved unprecedented successes in architecture in the 20th century. The Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, is considered Australia's greatest architectural masterpiece and one of the most famous buildings of the 20th century. The Grand Arch by Johan Otto von Spreckelsen has become a symbol of modern Paris. However, Danish architecture is represented by much more than these two iconic buildings – a whole range of internationally recognized projects by legendary architects such as Bjarke Ingels, Hennig Larsen, C. F. Møller, Jan Gehl, or the studio 3XN.
“The exhibition Contemporary Danish Architecture, created in cooperation with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Danish Association of Architectural Firms, and the Initiative for Danish Design and Architecture, presents not only a selection of the best of contemporary Danish architecture but also its core values. Danish architecture is characterized by a strictly ecological profile, sustainability, empathy, and above all, a democratic approach, according to which elegant design and beautiful architecture are not reserved for the elite but rather intended for the broad masses.” states Lars Kjellberg, representative of the Danish ambassador.
“All these unique projects were selected for their top-quality and also because they embody Danish identity: a high standard of living, a modern approach to healthcare, education, and study, and a strong emphasis on environmental friendliness. The exhibition also vividly illustrates the role of culture in urban space, which goes hand in hand with modern Scandinavian lifestyle.” adds Gabriel Kurtis from the Gallery of Architecture Brno.
The opening of the exhibition will be held in the presence of the Danish ambassador's representative Lars Kjellberg on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at 6:00 PM at the courtyard of the Brno-Střed City Hall/Dominikánská 2 and will continue in the Gallery of Architecture Brno at 6:30 PM. The exhibition will last until August 31, 2014, and will be open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM.
