Satellite - Sprawl
In searching for a topic, we thought about the impact of ideology on architecture - but what is today's ideology? Boundless consumption, 3 cars and a villa beyond Prague?
How do we actually perceive the topic of satellite homes? Architects and urban planners point to the catastrophic impacts on the city, dysfunctional streets, disrupted interpersonal relationships.
After an era of gray, human unification, and masses, the tide has turned, and people finally wanted "their own." Their paradise on earth, where everything would be permitted. They wanted their house, their identity, their privacy.
What did they get? Catalog houses, each so different, yet all the same. Hidden behind a row of thuja trees and a concrete wall. So what is their skin? Plaster on the facade? A balustrade on the balcony? A cheap concrete wall?
The character of houses in satellite developments is specific in that the houses have two skins. The "beautiful" one that the house wears over a porotherm foundation, and the protective one in the form of a fence, preventing interaction with the surroundings. In such an environment, the street is reduced to a corridor defined by walls.
Instead of fighting suburbia, we propose an alternative way of defining privacy. We leave the houses as they are and focus on the boundaries - the protective skin, which we expand with functional content.
The principle lies in creating a 2.5-meter-thick layer that communicates with the street and defines a private garden. Into the filter, we insert the missing civic amenities - a small shop, a café, a solarium, a sauna, a newsagent...
We create a new attire for the house that more accurately reflects its identity. To a pseudo-baroque body, pseudo-baroque attire. However, we do not hide the building materials, their sincerity and certain absurdity of the place and time come through.
And in 30 years? Satellite houses may no longer be relevant - the street, however, will remain, and our boundaries will serve as a platform for new construction, as an imprint of the history of former development. Or nothing will change - but it will be a step towards a better life in the area.
