Zlín - The winner of the open landscape architecture competition for the transformation of the Svobody orchard in the center of Zlín is the proposal from the authors of the Prague studio Loom on the Moon. Five participants from the Czech Republic and Slovakia entered the competition, which was announced by the city in collaboration with the Office of the City Architect of Zlín. The jury, composed of landscape architects, architects, and city representatives, evaluated the entries. The second place was awarded to the work of the atelier consequence forma architects, while the third place went to the proposal from the studio of architect Lucie Radilová, announced today to ČTK by the spokesperson of the Zlín City Hall, Tomáš Melzer.
"The aim of the competition was to find the best way to revitalize the park and create a space for relationships with the surroundings, especially with the dominant castle. The planned investment for this transformation is estimated at 90 million crowns. The intention is to enhance the cultural and social significance of this place," said the spokesperson.
The winning proposal respects the current character of the park, preserves its atmosphere, and utilizes the space around the castle. It also refers to the artistic installation Zlín Mirrors, which was added to the park last year on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the first written mention of Zlín. The author of the installation is also the studio Loom on the Moon.
"The winning proposal works with the artistic motif of the Zlín Mirrors, using it as an initiation for further interventions and complementing the park space with other forms of installations that are on the border of art, minor architecture, and furniture. At the same time, the project will need to be well coordinated with the planned reconstruction of the Zlín castle," stated Mayor Jiří Korec (ANO).
According to him, the proposal shows an effort to bring change. "The proposed solution is different from the nearby Komenský park and is intended to connect to the recently reconstructed market Pod Kaštany. There is still a challenging path ahead for implementation, but in the end, it could result in a truly distinctive, utilized, and vibrant public park," Korec stated. There will be discussions with the winner about incorporating the jury's comments and completing the competition proposal. The city plans to complete the transformation by 2026.
People will be able to view the competition proposals from January 8, 2024, in the passage of the Zlaté jablko shopping and entertainment center.
