Liberec – The future shape of the area known as Paper Square, which is one of the oldest parts of Liberec, should be determined by an architectural competition. The city will announce it next January, and aims to present the results in September. According to Mayor Jaroslav Zámečník, the city hall will proceed according to the rules of the Czech Chamber of Architects, with the costs of the competition reaching nearly two million crowns.

"The results of the competition will be evaluated by a jury, which will mostly consist of independent experts,” said the mayor. The winner of the architectural competition will then receive a contract from the city hall for further design work. "They will complete the territorial study and the project documentation for the city terraces,” said Zámečník. The terraces refer to the slopes that border the area of Paper Square.

This location is among the most neglected areas in the center of the city with a population of one hundred thousand, even though some houses have been renovated here in recent years. The city aims to beautify this neighborhood. According to the mayor, architects should show how the city should proceed. "What it will look like is the subject of the architectural competition,” he added. About 20 different owners hold land in the area, with the city owning the most. It owns approximately 10,000 square meters. The city hall leadership has previously stated that it would like to have a creative neighborhood here, which would primarily serve a cultural and educational function.
