Liberec – Liberec wants to modify the acquired land in the lower center of the city, in the area known as Papírové náměstí, by summer. They will temporarily create 40 parking spaces there. This was announced in a press release by city spokesperson Jana Kodymová.
The city acquired the land through a swap with the Liberec construction company Syner Group. The municipality obtained nearly 7,000 m² in the lower center in exchange for almost 24,500 m² on the outskirts of the city in Kunratice. They also paid an additional 2.3 million crowns. The opposition criticized the deal as unfavorable for the city. However, the city leadership considers the area in the lower center to be strategic and initiated the negotiations for the swap themselves.
According to Mayor Jaroslav Zámečník (Mayors for the Liberec Region), completing the transfer of land opens up an opportunity for the city to start fulfilling the promise that the long-neglected area will again become a dignified and beloved part of the lower center of Liberec. "Our priority remains that approximately 140 new apartments will be built there. Therefore, I consider the acquisition of this land into the ownership of the city to be a very important step. In the first phase, the staff of the Technical Services of the City of Liberec will gradually rehabilitate the area. They will clean the site, remove overgrowth, and tidy up the greenery. By summer at the latest, they will create approximately 40 new paved parking spaces there," Zámečník stated.
However, this parking lot is intended to be temporary until it becomes clear what the entire area will look like in the future. "Before that happens, the city wants to start intensively communicating and collaborating with the owners of the land and properties in the vicinity, as well as with the public," added Kodymová.
There are about 20 owners of land in this area, including the city itself previously. Thanks to the land acquired through the swap, the city is now the largest owner in the area with about 10,000 m². The vicinity of Papírové náměstí is one of the oldest parts of the city. However, it has long been among the neglected places in the center, although some buildings have been renovated in recent years. "This is one of the most valuable locations in the very heart of Liberec," previously stated Jiří Janďourek, head of the city’s architecture office. According to him, no similar neighborhood exists in this city of one hundred thousand.
