A unique opportunity for students and graduates of architectural fields from Czech universities is offered by the new edition of the Kaplicky Internship competition. The author of this year's winning project on a free theme will complete a three-month paid internship at the London studio of David Chipperfield Architects. The competition, which commemorates the legacy of the renowned architect Jan Kaplický, is organized by the Bakala Foundation in collaboration with the Design Museum in London and the Kaplicky Centre Foundation. Five talented young architects, winners of previous editions of the Kaplicky Internship competition, have already completed internships in prestigious London studios. They worked in the offices of Eva Jiřičná, Zaha Hadid, Allies and Morrison, Adjaye Associates, and last year's winner at Heatherwick Studio.
Internship at David Chipperfield Architects The winner of the 6th edition of the Kaplicky Internship competition will spend three months in the London studio of another prominent British architect, the founder of the famous gallery 9H, David Chipperfield. He founded his own studio in 1985, and today has offices not only in London but also in Berlin, Milan, and Shanghai. David Chipperfield Architects realizes cultural, public, commercial, and residential projects around the world, many of which can be found in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Japan. The studio has received numerous international awards, including the prestigious Stirling Prize in 2007 for the project of the Museum of Modern Literature in Marbach, Germany, the birthplace of playwright Friedrich Schiller. For the project of the reconstruction of the New Museum in Berlin, which was severely damaged during World War II, the studio received the European Mies van der Rohe Award and the Deutscher Architekturpreis in 2011.
Participation in the Kaplicky Internship 2020 “The Kaplicky Internship competition opens doors to the world of architecture for students and graduates. They will try to defend their project before an international jury, see how they stack up against their peers from other universities, and the best will have the opportunity to work in one of the prestigious London studios,” says Václav Pecha, director of the Bakala Foundation. “We want to remind young architects of Jan Kaplický's legacy and motivate them to think about gaining experience abroad.”
Students in their final year of bachelor's studies, during follow-up master's studies, or within the first year after graduation can apply for the Kaplicky Internship competition. The theme of the competition work is free, and students can submit their bachelor's or diploma theses, no later than July 6, 2020. The competition winner will be selected by an expert jury and announced on September 24, 2020, in Prague at the Winternitz Villa designed by Adolf Loos and Karel Lhota.
