The Bakala Foundation and The Design Museum in London, together with the Kaplicky Centre Foundation, announce the 3rd year of the Kaplicky Internship competition. Students in their final years of architectural studies at Czech universities can participate, and the winner will receive a three-month paid internship at Allies and Morrison studio in London.
The competition organizers aim to not only commemorate the legacy of the renowned architect, designer, and creator Jan Kaplický through the annual award for talented students, but also to encourage and motivate talented emerging architects. “We want to provide them with work experience with the best in the field and help them establish professional connections on an international level. To awaken in them the energy and desire to elevate Czech architecture to a global level,” comments the goal of the Kaplicky Internship competition by Bakala Foundation director Václav Pecha.
“As in previous years, the winner will again have a three-month internship at one of the best architectural studios in London. This year's recipient will have the opportunity to work at Allies and Morrison studio,” stated Irena Murray from the co-organizing Kaplicky Centre Foundation.
In previous years, students competed for internships at Eva Jiricna Architects and Zaha Hadid Architects. “Gaining experience with Eva Jiřičná, Bob Allies, and Graham Morrison, or with Zaha Hadid's collaborators is a fantastic opportunity and a dream for many architects. I know that Jan Kaplický would be pleased with this collaboration,” adds the president of the foundation, Eliška Kaplicky Fuchsová.
The competition entries in the form of conceptual studies can be submitted until June 30. The theme is not specified, and competitors are not bound by its selection. The names of the finalists who will advance to the oral interview will be announced in August. The winner will be chosen by an independent jury in October 2017. More information about the competition can be found on the Bakala Foundation website.
The Kaplický Internship program is another of the activities through which Zdeněk and Michaela Bakala support modern art and architecture. They are also dedicated to the development of young talents in general; their foundation has already supported more than a hundred Czech students studying at prestigious foreign universities.
