Brno – A new water feature is set to appear next year at Dominican Square in Brno, which emerged from this year's architectural-artistic competition. Over 50 proposals were submitted. There will be three differently sized lying flattened cones on the square, from which water will spray in varying intensities throughout the summer, ranging from misting to larger streams of water. Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS) stated at a press conference that she initially did not like the design during the final selection, but eventually fell in love with it.

The square has been waiting for a new water feature since the completion of the reconstruction in 2018. The council already announced one competition, but since they did not like the winning proposal, they canceled it because they could not select another. The water feature is intended to enhance the experience at the square, especially on hot summer days, as the newly planted trees are still small. Otherwise, the square is covered with continuous paving. "The selection was not easy. I believe that the people of Brno will respond positively to the proposal," said Vaňková.

The creators of the design are the duo Tomáš Pavlacký and Michael Gabriel. It symbolizes piping emerging from an infinite perspective. "Moreover, for me it is a successful reference to the so-called smoking pipes that were present in many places around the city as part of the heating steam pipelines," said Deputy Mayor Tomáš Koláčný (Pirates). In the last ten years, these pipes have been disappearing as the steam piping is being converted to hot water piping.

The new water feature will cost approximately 7.5 million crowns, and the council must announce a competition for its construction. While before the reconstruction Dominican Square served as a parking lot in front of the New Town Hall, afterwards cars had to be removed, and aside from four trees, there are deck chairs placed for relaxation during the summer, and around Christmas, Advent markets take place here. In recent years, it has also become a venue for various demonstrations.
