History, present, and future of the main train station and its surroundings in a field lecture by Martin Strakoš and Romana Rosová. Ostrava Main Train Station is a valuable building in the Brussels style and a key entrance gate to the city. The city of Ostrava recently commissioned a project preparation for a radical transformation of the forecourt area through a selection process by the architectural studio CASUA led by architect Oleg Haman. The studio created several possible design variations, yet none could mitigate the negative influence of certain specifics selected by the city and the Railway Administration, including the planned exit of underpasses from platforms in the forecourt area. These changes currently remain on paper, and the public is largely unaware of them. It is important to identify the values of the mentioned location, highlight the quality of the architecture of the current station building as well as the forecourt area, and emphasize the need for a comprehensive solution to the whole, including the search for a suitable project, preferably through an architectural competition. Connecting the station building with the forecourt and resolving the link of the main station to the center of Přívoz represent significant challenges for the quality of the future solution of the mentioned location, which we will discuss on-site with architectural historian Martin Strakoš and historian Romana Rosová from the National Heritage Institute. Meeting at the main train station. We are organizing this as part of the Architecture - Public Matter series.
