Ostrava - The reconstruction of the area in front of the main train station in Ostrava has been completed. The renovation, costing around 71 million Czech crowns, was this year's largest investment project of the central district of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz, said city hall spokesperson Jana Pondělíčková today. The modernization has brought a better connection for public transportation, as well as an expansion of parking spaces. The reconstruction started this February; originally, the modifications were supposed to begin last year when the district announced a tender for the construction contractor. However, the public contract was eventually canceled due to suspicions of collusion among the bidders. In the original competition, the cost of the improvements to the area in front of the station soared to 111 million crowns, but during the repeated tender, it was successfully reduced to 71 million crowns. "I am pleased that we managed to complete the construction on time and with the desired quality, saving about 40 million crowns. Thanks largely to funds from the European Union, we have created an aesthetically pleasing and functional transportation gateway to the city," said Deputy Mayor Dalibor Mouka to ČTK. A new turnaround for long-distance buses has been added near the station, the trolleybus loop has been expanded, and barrier-free access, a dispatch center with facilities for drivers, and an area with refreshments and public toilets have also been included. "We are currently looking for a new tenant for the refreshments," explained Pondělíčková. The number of parking spaces has also increased, from fifty originally in front of the station building to nearly a hundred now.
