Roger Diener studied at the Faculty of Architecture at the prestigious ETH Zurich. In 1980, he took over the leadership of his father's architectural office, Marcus Diener, which was established in the 1940s. The studio Diener & Diener Architekten has long been dedicated to residential and administrative projects, public buildings, as well as urban planning and renovations primarily in Basel. Here, the studio gained attention through a number of successful new buildings, such as the Migros AG shopping center with the Schweizerhof Lucerne hotel or the Kohlenberg office building. Their structures correspond with the historical heritage of the city center while their timeless appearance represents contemporary life and meets its modern demands.
Key projects of the studio include the Basel Museum of Architecture Domus-House, the residential and office building on Bäumleingasse, the Centre PasquArt in Biel, the Gmurzynska Gallery in Cologne, the Swiss Embassy in Berlin, and the completion of the eastern wing of the Natural History Museum there.
Architect Diener has also long been active in academia. As a visiting professor, he taught, among others, at Harvard University, the Vienna School of Architecture, the Academie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam, or the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. In 1999, together with architects Jacques Herzog, Marcel Meili, and Pierre de Meuron, he founded an urban research institute called Studio Basel at his alma mater ETH Zurich. The publication of the successful book Switzerland — An Urban Portrait (2004) resulted in the regulation of extensive construction in the Swiss Alps until then. The studio is now focused on urban transformation and land urbanization worldwide – from the trilingual region of Basel, through the Canary Islands, the Nile Valley, the Omani city of Muscat, to Florida.
