Thomas Burlon

The Ship Belongs Not Just to Theseus
The first event of the new lecture series on architecture Finally! will present an unconventional dialogue between the German architect Thomas Burlon and the German-Belgian artist Bernd Trasberger. The evening, titled The Ship Belongs Not Just to Theseus, will focus on the theme of collective authorship.

Thomas Burlon (Schneider Oelsen) was a partner of the now-defunct, yet during its existence very progressive Berlin architectural studio Brandlhuber+Emde, Burlon from 2009. Among their most significant works is the radical reconstruction of the industrial building Antivilla near Berlin, which captivates at first glance with its exposed concrete facade and the concept of openings instead of traditional windows. In Berlin, they designed a building on Brunnenstrasse, which serves as apartments, a gallery, and was the location of their then-office, as well as the transformation of the brutalist St. Agnes Church into the König gallery, for which they received the Architekturpreis Berlin. Thomas Burlon is now active in his studio Schneider Oelsen.

Bernd Trasberger is a German-Belgian visual artist whose work focuses primarily on architecture, public space, and their role in society. In his works, he utilizes or reproduces architectural and design artifacts, which he subsequently modifies in the context of their historical development and social significance. In one of his first works, Am Neuen Wasserturm, he created a walkthrough miniature of the Mönchengladbach district. His rubbings of architects' tombs (Tombs of Architects) pay homage to modernism pioneer Mies van der Rohe, among others.
