In Prague's Center for Architecture and Urban Planning CAMP, the conference CZECH STAIRS will take place on May 20, 2024. This is already the third edition of a series of conferences dedicated to the topic of staircases in architecture. Part of this event will also be the launch of the visual monograph STAIRS [1], published by KANT, which presents the realizations of staircases by significant Czech architects over the past 33 years. The book will be launched by Japanese architect and Tadao Ando's student Kazunori Fujimoto.
Conference The third edition of the professional conference CZECH STAIRS will take place on May 20, 2024, at CAMP Prague. It follows two previous conferences focused on the design and realization of staircases by prominent Czech architects and organized in cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture at VUT in Brno (2017) and the Faculty of Architecture at ČVUT in Prague (2018). The main contribution of this year's conference will be delivered by the notable foreign guest, architect Kazunori Fujimoto, who will speak about his projects of minimalist concrete staircases. Contributions will also be presented by Magdaléna Rochová, David Kotek, Jan Pěnčík, Jakub Potůček, David Wittassek, and Břetislav Eichler. The hall has a capacity of 100 people.
Monograph STAIRS [1] The photographic publication presents a selection of 99 staircase realizations by Czech architects over the past 33 years. The editorial team consisting of Břetislav Eichler, Ester Havlová, Hana Procházková, Martin Kloda, and David Wittassek contacted more than seventy Czech architects led by Eva Jiřičná, Josef Pleskot, Roman Koucký, Stanislav Fiala, and Martin Rajniš. The preface on the topic of staircases as a cultural phenomenon or about the meaning, significance, and purpose of stairs and staircases was written by PhDr Jiří Plos. The book will be published in an edition of 1500 copies and with 350 pages by the KANT publishing house of Karel Kerlický, and at the end of the conference, it will be ceremoniously launched by Japanese architect Kazunori Fujimoto.
Kazunori Fujimoto Tour The host of the project, Japanese architect and minimalist Kazunori Fujimoto, will undertake a week-long trip to significant buildings of Czech architecture from the 20th and 21st centuries. During his exploratory journey, he will visit both contemporary architectural realizations and several gems of the past. At selected buildings, he will meet directly with their authors. During his trip, Kazunori Fujimoto will also present the work of his atelier, including a number of realizations of houses in minimalist style, to students at UMPRUM (Prague, May 21), FAU TUL (Liberec, May 22), and FA VUT (Brno, May 23).
The conference and the trip of architect Kazunori Fujimoto are prepared and coordinated by Břetislav Eichler.
