New construction of the AFI Vokovice administrative building
The corner plot where AFI Vokovice stands today previously functioned as a periphery. However, with the construction of the Nádraží Veleslavín metro station, it gained significance. And it was waiting for a suitable dominant building that would become one of the important objects rhythmizing European Avenue. This has been successfully achieved by the AFI Vokovice administrative building at the intersection with Kladenská Street. The building is visible when driving in both directions, especially from the direction of the airport. The new metro station and the adjacent bus terminal have brought a multitude of people directly to the ground floor of AFI.
The need to divide the design into two buildings was also utilized by the architects in the mass concept. The lower building A forms the "back" of the whole complex, while the vertically conceived building B forms the dominant "head." A quiet space "courtyard" with sufficient dispersal area and wide options for park modifications (greenery, mature trees, water...) has been created between the two buildings. Building B is elevated compared to the adjacent building A and is supported by a glazed ground floor with commercial spaces directly connected to the metro station.
The distinctly sculpted facade, with its curved profile, offers an interesting and variable appearance when viewed from the outside. This expression is unmistakable, clearly distinguishing itself from uniform flat glass facades. The floor plan shape of the building favorably reduces the overall area of the facade. The organic shape is most suitable in terms of heat losses and gains. At the same time, it allows for the use of simple modulation for any divisions and maximum economy in construction by using a single module throughout the entire perimeter of the building. The repetition of the same detail allows for its perfect solution and the use of prefabrication, without affecting the quality and strength of the overall architectural expression.
