On the edge of the historic block development of Prague's Vršovice, on 28. pluku street, there is a complex of buildings that were once the imperial and royal barracks for infantry and cavalry. Over time, the original military compound has become a heterogeneous amalgamation of original structures, additional extensions, and various annexes. Just as the patriotic pathos of the legend of the "Prague children" from 28. pluku has vanished, the complex has lost its original floor plan order, symmetry, and the unified appearance of the barrack buildings' facades.
The genius loci of this place was restored with the decision to build a new judicial complex here, comprising four Prague district courts and a public prosecutor's office. The historical neo-Renaissance buildings along the perimeter of the block have been cleared of later extensions and reconstructed to their original form. The fencing, with the southern gate being the main entrance to the compound, has been restored. In the middle of the block, a new building has been constructed, which adheres to the axial symmetry of the entire complex in its floor plan layout and the appearance of its facades.
The new building is architecturally distinguished from its surroundings by a deliberately uncomplicated design of the outer shell - the repeating rhythm of windows with structural glazing in wooden frames flush with the gray plaster does not aim to compete with the decorative neo-Renaissance treatment of the facades of the historical barrack buildings. The transparent outer shell at the main entrance and in both inner atriums reveals color-coded corridors leading to the courtrooms on each floor.
The historical barracks buildings are used as offices for judicial personnel, connected to the new building below ground level. The new construction houses almost a hundred courtrooms, an auction hall, an information office, a conference hall, and other spaces necessary for the functioning of a judicial complex of this scale. The basement of the new building includes, among other things, garages, a loading yard, archives, and also cells for detainees.
The user's requirement for the complex was to prevent the collision of public movement and judicial personnel and to achieve their strict separation - the only places where mutual meetings occur are the courtrooms, press lounges, information office, and waiting rooms.
