Prague - The design of two out of ten new metro D stations will be determined by an architectural competition. The appearance of the interiors of the remaining eight stations will result from artistic designs. This was stated by Deputy Mayor Petra Kolínská (Trojkoalice/Green Party) in response to a question from ČTK. The metro D is estimated to cost 50 billion crowns. Automated driverless trains will operate on it.

The Trojkoalice, which criticized the appearance of the stations on the A line opened last year, initially requested a competition for all stations on the D line. However, architects will ultimately only design the appearance of the Náměstí Bratří Synků and Náměstí Míru stations. The relevant permissions for the eight stations of the new metro between Pankrác and Písnice have already been issued by the authorities. Therefore, the city cannot select their appearance in the architectural competition.

"We will instruct the transport company to prepare artistic solutions for these stations," Kolínská stated. "Metro D is the last metro we are building for many decades. Therefore, architectural quality is extremely important," the deputy added.

Metro D will connect the city center with the southern part of the city. Construction will initially begin on the section from Pankrác to Písnice. In the next phase, the remaining two stations, Náměstí Bratří Synků and Náměstí Míru, will be constructed. The first part of the construction should be completed by 2022, but it is unclear whether the expected deadline will be met. Currently, not all lands necessary for construction have been acquired. Prague recently applied for a building permit. According to Kolínská, the process will be interrupted precisely because the city does not have the consent of all landowners.

The stations recently opened on the A line to Motol cost approximately 20 billion crowns. The metro has three lines with a total length of 65.2 kilometers.
