About Marie Restituta

Marie Restituta Kafková SFCC, born on May 1, 1894 in Husovice as Helena Kafková, was an Austrian nun and martyr of Moravian descent, a victim of Nazi terror. In 1896, her family moved to Vienna, where Helena subsequently joined the congregation of the Sisters of Franciscan Christian Charity (Sorores Franciscanae a Caritate Christiana) and took the name Marie Restituta. She worked as a nurse at a hospital in Mödling and then as head nurse and assistant to Dr. Stöhr at a hospital in Vienna. After Austria was annexed to Nazi Germany, Marie Restituta had multiple confrontations with the Nazi authorities. Based on a tip-off, she was arrested directly in the operating room. On February 18, 1942, she was sentenced to death for treason and was executed on March 30, 1943. Additional information can be found in the book "Vhod či nevhod - Life Sacrifice of Sister Marie Restituta" (author: SAGARDOY Antonio OCD, year of publication 2008, available from the parish priest at the Roman Catholic Parish Brno-Lesná). In 1998, she was declared blessed by Pope John Paul II, and since 1999, the Husovice park between Provazníkova, Hálkova, Elgartova, and Rotalova streets has borne her name.

About the park

It was logically decided to situate the sculptural work dedicated to this brave woman in the area of this park. The park, covering over one hectare, managed by the MČ Brno-sever, is located on the grounds of a former cemetery. After the cemetery ceased to function and the exhumation of the deceased, a project was created to transform this area into a publicly accessible park. Its realization began in 1993. From the original cemetery, the Memorial to the Fallen from World War I was preserved in the form of a rounded stone block with names, which was complemented by a stone plate in memory of the victims of World War II. Since the two parts of the memorial did not correspond, as part of the current project of the park's revitalization, architects have proposed to replace both incongruent elements with a single common memorial in the form of a block of quality concrete and situate a statue dedicated to Marie Restituta nearby. The aim of the revitalization is to create a modern open space in the park that allows various activities, which will also include a social space for holding cultural and commemorative events.

As part of the arrangement of the surroundings of the envisioned statue of Marie Restituta, participants may submit to the contracting authority both a proposal for the statue and a solution for the arrangement of the Memorial to the Fallen from World War I and II (commemorative site see description above). The purpose is to replace both incongruent elements of the Memorial with a common memorial - commemorative site in a suitable compositional integration with the proposed statue of Marie Restituta. Project documents for the above - see part 6 of the competition conditions (competition documents).

This is an optional part of the competition conditions (will not be evaluated). The proposed solution is intended to create an idea of the optimal arrangement of the surroundings of the proposed statue.

About the subject of the competition

The subject of the competition is the development of an artistic design for the realization of a sculptural work dedicated to Marie Restituta Kafková - which will be placed in the Park of Marie Restituta in Brno-Husovice near the commemorative site - a monument honoring the victims of wars among the citizens of Husovice. The statue is understood as a tribute to Marie Restituta Kafková, whose life and personal attitudes - deep faith, courage, sense of justice, freedom, and humanity - are exemplary.
