The centerpiece of the new restaurant Vážka, which is part of the four-star guesthouse Jurášek in Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem, is a large wood-burning fireplace clad in natural stone. The design of the guesthouse and restaurant was created by architect Marek Danyś, who also oversaw its construction. The design and construction of the fireplace were carried out by stove-maker David Antonín from the stove shop Krby Hlučín.
The concept and style of the entire area of the guesthouse and restaurant are based on natural materials, mainly wood and stone. This had to correspond with the interior of the restaurant and, of course, the appearance and execution of the fireplace.

"Due to the use of massive pieces of natural stone for the fireplace's casing, the construction of the entire fireplace was not only a craft but also a technical challenge. It was necessary to design an atypical metal frame that could bear the weight of the stone while matching the design of the chimney and the large niche for wood. We worked with stonemasons to split the stone to size directly during the implementation," describes the construction process by stove fitter David Antonín.

Design Element and Main Source of Heat

The fireplace is designed as a warm air fireplace with partial heat accumulation, serving not only as an aesthetic enhancement of the restaurant but also as the main source of heating. In addition to the natural stone that clad the fireplace, cast chamotte was used for the construction, which has the ability to accumulate heat during burning, subsequently radiating it gradually into the room. So even after the fire in the fireplace goes out, the shell of the fireplace remains warm and pleasantly heats the interior.

For the realization of the fireplace, a fireplace insert with a large glazing width of 90 centimeters was used. This allows restaurant guests a generous view of the flames, contributing to the cozy atmosphere of the space.

Construction Under Open Sky

That it was not a completely standard fireplace installation is also confirmed by the precisely set deadline for completing the construction, which the investor insisted upon. The construction of the restaurant began in May 2019 and was completed in August of the same year. "For the first time, we had to build a fireplace indoors under the open sky, when the roof trusses were completed, but the roofing was not yet laid. The trades followed one another quickly, and everything went according to the pre-agreed plan," adds David Antonín.

The entire concept and construction of the restaurant are an example of the harmonious connection of natural materials with modern design, resulting in a functional space with a unique atmosphere.
