On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Adolf Loos's birth, the Museum of the City of Brno, in collaboration with the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Brno University of Technology, published a representative publication Adolf Loos, European. His Legacy in Brno and Beyond at the end of 2020, which accompanied the exhibition of the same name.
In academic literature, the ties of Adolf Loos to his native Brno have so far been limited only to his childhood, schooling, and sporadic contacts during certain periods of his creative career. However, careful study of sources and literature has uncovered relationships that were continuous – family, builders, architects, friends. Despite discord with his mother, he remained connected with his sisters and later with an adopted nephew, with whom he perhaps even collaborated. He often lectured in Brno and established himself as a well-known and respected figure there. One of Loos's most significant clients was Viktor Bauer from Brno, for whom he designed projects in Hrušovany near Brno and later in Brno itself, to an extent not previously known even in professional circles. Loos's contacts and collaborations with local architects not only influenced their work but left a significant social mark on the Brno architectural scene. It was in Brno that Loos became acquainted with the writer Bohumil Markalous, whose personality was crucial for him concerning his relationship with the Czech lands. It was also in Brno that he met Jan Vaněk and Karel Lhota, who significantly contributed to the fame of Prague's Müller Villa, Loos's "most beautiful house".
The book presents the latest research findings on the work and personality of Adolf Loos, particularly in connection with his "Brno footprints". The research activities of recent years, conducted based on careful searches of available sources and field surveys, thus correct and often completely reinterpret schematically repeated facts. At the same time, they confirm that Loos's professional and social ties to his native city were not merely sporadic, but at certain periods very intense. The book recalls in its introductory chapter some of Loos's life data and moments associated with his hometown and gradually presents his works for Brno. Very revealing are the contributions regarding the sugar refinery in Hrušovany near Brno and Bauer's chateau. The same applies to Loos's father, a Brno sculptor and stonemason, who was among the leading representatives of Brno's bourgeois culture in the second half of the 19th century. It also includes the Brno footprints of Loos's students and the resonance of his work among Brno researchers.
