Autodesk, a global leader in 2D and 3D design software for manufacturing, construction, media, and entertainment, announced that it is collaborating with the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) and the Incheon Urban Development Corporation (IUDC) to create the first Asian digital city in Incheon, Korea, and the “City of the Future” project in the Song-do district. Autodesk has identified Incheon as the second pilot city of the “Digital City” project after Salzburg, which was announced in July of this year.

Autodesk, IFEZ, and IUDC will collaborate on the development of the digital city, meaning they will work together on a detailed 3D model of the city that will allow users from the public, municipal government, construction, and business communities to utilize technological solutions for visualization, analysis, and simulations of real-life scenarios in the city to support decision-making and share information in a collaborative environment. The goal of this project is to assist in developing a cutting-edge management system for the city of the future.
Another goal of this pilot program is for Incheon to integrate 3D models of both above-ground and underground elements on an open technology platform that supports secure and robust integration of CAD data, building information models, geospatial data, linear and area construction, and infrastructure data from a vast geographic area. By combining this data with Autodesk tools designed for realistic visualization and simulation, Incheon will create an intuitive and engaging way for its citizens to gain an accurate understanding of design and construction management, the environment, and operations in the city.
“The partnership with Autodesk will help us realize our vision of building a digital city and transforming Incheon into an international business hub for Northeast Asia, leading in education, finance, commerce, and shopping,” said Lee Heon-Seok, CEO of IFEZ. “Autodesk technology will also facilitate our planning and organization of important upcoming events, such as the World City Expo next year and the Asian Games in 2014. Overall, the Autodesk Digital Cities initiative will help turn our ambitious dream into reality.”
Autodesk and IUDC have been collaborating for several years. Autodesk’s recognized expertise and credibility in engineering technology, data sets, and visualization will provide the city of Incheon with detailed visualization of proposals at the citywide level.
Kim Dong-Kee, president of IUDC, said: “The Digital City project not only saves costs but also achieves high-quality urban development through 3D modeling technologies, which will be applied from the planning phase through construction.”
“Our Digital City technology will help the city and its citizens communicate, collaborate, and realize projects significantly more efficiently and, in the long term, more rationally,” said Lisa Campbell, vice president of Autodesk Geospatial. “This announcement builds on our collaboration with Salzburg, the first pilot city of the project, to create a practical tool that assists cities in planning and implementing long-term sustainable development. This is essential for future cities and economies.”
As the pilot project of the initial phase of the Digital City initiative, the investment project of the mini-city Tomorrow City (T-City – City of the Future) amounting to 100 billion South Korean won has been selected, located in the New Song-do city. T-City, which is set to open in August 2009, is a six-story mini-city project with “ubiquitous” technologies (u-city) covering a total area of 31,697 m², where diverse, futuristic u-services will be offered, including u-transportation and u-shopping. IFEZ will explore the potential benefits of the new 3D city management system in this pilot program, which will cover the entire development project process from design through construction and operation to maintenance of the city post-construction.
3D modeling of the city allows for more informed decisions based on real data, thereby enabling IFEZ to communicate these decisions and options to a broad range of stakeholders. Moreover, the municipal government can minimize the impact of development projects on millions of city citizens and provide them with better administrative services, as the collaboration environment built on a detailed 3D model allows for simulating and accurately understanding the impacts of plans and proposals throughout the planning and construction processes.
