Galerie VI PER warmly invites you on Thursday, March 17, 2022, from 7:00 PM to a debate Perception of Space with Miroslav Petříček and Pavla Melková, moderated by Jiří Tourka, and associated with the presentation of the book of the same name by Pavla Melková. Perception of Architecture has two essential parts. One is the quality of the object itself, which also includes the ability to speak to its inhabitants. The other is the art of people perceiving, experiencing, and understanding architecture. The condition for both is mutual communication, the foundation of which is the language of architecture and the language of its perception. In reality, however, it is one and the same language, and the knowledge of the language of perception is a prerequisite for the ability to incorporate it into the language of discourse. Sensitivity of perception and the art of communication can be initiated and refined. And the significance of interpreting the perception of the environment in various forms of art can lie precisely in enhancing the sensitivity of both individuals and society. The search for a common language between the environment and man simultaneously aids in the search for a language of understanding between man and man. Pavla Melková is a practicing architect who also engages in theory, writing, visual arts, and pedagogy. She completed a Fulbright scholarship at GSAPP Columbia University in New York under Professor Kenneth Frampton. She is the author of several books, such as: Bastion XXXI U Božích muk, Experiencing Architecture, The Table by the Window, on the Table a Book, The Humanistic Role of Architecture, Space for People in the Work of Michal Škoda, Edges of the Day, Inner Time, To the Table!, Edge. Memorial of Jan Palach in Všetiče, Architecture of Reciprocity or Perception of Space. Along with Miroslav Cikán, she is a partner at MCA atelier, founded the Office of Public Space at the Institute of Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague, and teaches the course Concept and Interpretation at the Faculty of Architecture. Miroslav Petříček is a Czech philosopher and theorist of visual arts. His thinking has been significantly influenced by Jan Patočka, whose residential seminar he attended in the 1970s. He focuses on the philosophy of art, the intersections between philosophy, film, literature, and art, and contemporary (postmodern) French philosophy. He has translated several key works from German and French philosophy, including The Bright Chamber (Roland Barthes), Time and Narration (Paul Ricœur), and The Idea of Phenomenology (Edmund Husserl). Among his most-read publications are Introduction to (Contemporary) Philosophy, an analysis of the dynamics of detective novels The Majesty of the Law: Raymond Chandler and Late Deconstruction, the essay book Thinking in Images, or Philosophy en noir. He teaches at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, and also collaborates with the Center for Audiovisual Studies at FAMU.
