The Association Architecture 489, in collaboration with the Club For Old Prague, the Empty Houses association, the initiative Don’t Demolish, Don’t Expand Libeňský Bridge, and with the support of the National Museum, organizes a walk through the Transgas area, commented on by the only living architect of the building, Václav Aulický, followed by a panel discussion in the large hall of the New Building of the National Museum.
The invitation to the panel was accepted by the Mayor of Prague, Adriana Krnáčová (ANO), architectural historian from Palacký University in Olomouc, Rostislav Švácha, rapper and promoter of brutalism, Vladimír 518, representative of the owner of the complex and developer HB Reavis, Petr Herman, former director of the Institute for Planning and Development of Prague, architect Petr Hlaváček, architect from the CMCA studio, Vít Máslo, sculptor and expert on post-war public space art, Pavel Karous, and architectural historian Radomíra Sedláková from the National Gallery. The event will be moderated by architect and historian Petr Klíma, among others, the author of the book Kotvy Máje. The topic will not only be the current case of Transgas, but also possibilities for the protection of post-war architecture in general.
“This is probably the last opportunity to see the entire complex with commentary from the only living architect from the authorized team, Václav Aulický. An extremely interesting group of experts on the subject and the representative of the developer will meet at the National Museum. A passionate discussion awaits us.” says the chairperson of the organizing association Architecture 489, Pavlína Krásná.
The case of the Transgas area has been ongoing since the summer of 2015 and continues to evoke mixed reactions among experts and the public. In favor of preserving the complex for its exceptional architectural quality, foreign experts also expressed themselves in February of this year - Boston’s Prof. Ana Miljački and Milan’s Prof. Arch. Domenico Chizzoneti.
The most recent voice comes from Germany. A few days ago, the Club For Old Prague received a statement from the local committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), in which the committee chair and also the Berlin state conservator, Prof. Jörg Haspel, evaluates the Transgas area as “a significant Czech contribution to European modern architecture” and appeals for the protection of the shared heritage of post-war architecture.
