Argentinian-Catalan architect Mario Corea will share his forty years of experience with projects and the realization of large public buildings, being a leading global expert on healthcare buildings, one of the most demanding disciplines in architecture. He designs elegant and spatially rich realizations as a continuation of the tradition of firmitas – utilitas – venustas in connection with his painting work, presenting projects realized in the last ten years in Spain and Latin America on November 19, 2018, at 18:30 at the Faculty of Architecture of ČVUT in Prague.
Mario Corea will speak as part of the November Talks 2018 – Visions series, which is part of a lecture series supported for the 13th year by the Sto Foundation at six European architecture schools. The lecture at the FA ČVUT for students and the public will be in English, and admission is free.
Mario Corea is a founding partner of Mario Corea Arquitectura, an architectural office based in Barcelona and Buenos Aires. Its work ranges from large-scale projects, such as hospitals and sports stadiums, to smaller projects for polyclinics and schools operating at the local level. The office draws on more than 40 years of experience in creating architecture around the world, with the primary goal of ensuring that each project is a true piece of public architecture contributing to urban identity and a sense of place.
“I have always understood that at the beginning of every project is the city. A city that reinvents itself day by day, and we, the architects, have the task of creating everyday architecture that forms its structure and sets the stage for everyday life,” says Mario Corea.
Mario Corea Hon. FAIA studied architecture at the Universidad del Litoral in Rosario, Argentina, and at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard. He began his practice in the USA in the 1960s with Josep Lluís Sert and Paul Rudolph. He is a recipient of several prestigious international awards, an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and a laureate of the National Award for Architecture, awarded by the Ministry of Culture of the Argentine Republic (2016).
From 1976 to 2007, he was a professor at the Escuela Superior de Arquitectura del Vallès and other universities.
Since 2015, Mario Corea has been the academic director of LA(H)B – Laboratory of Architecture for Healthcare in Barcelona, a platform for research on new concepts in the design of healthcare buildings. In addition to developing modular and industrialized hospitals, LA(H)B focuses on educating architects in specialized postgraduate and master's degree programs.
