The theme of the 2nd year of LŠU is Visions of the City in the 21st Century.

1. Lecture: "City of Short Distances"
April 15, 2014, Tuesday, from 6:00 PM at the Gallery Jaroslav Fragner (Betlémské náměstí 169/5a, Prague 1)
Speaker: Prof. Ing. arch. Karel Maier, Csc.
Abstract: A return to the pedestrian city as we know it from the 19th century. Spatial composition and urban principles in the 21st century lead us back to the traditional city and the way it has gradually developed over the last 2000 years.

2. Lecture: "Post-communist Transformation and Local Democracy: A Critical Perspective"
the lecture will be held in English
April 28, 2014, Monday, from 6:00 PM in the ARCHIP Hall (Fr. Křižíka 1, Prague 7)
Speaker: Martin Horák, Ph.D.
Abstract: Drawing on a study of urban development politics and policy in the 1990s, Horák will explore the roots of the enduring problems of closed governance and corruption that Prague has faced during the past two decades.

3. Lecture: "Visions of the City from the Club Za starou Prahu"
May 5, 2014, Monday, from 6:00 PM at the Gallery Jaroslav Fragner (Betlémské náměstí 169/5a, Prague 1)
Speaker: PhDr. Richard Biegel, Ph.D.
Abstract: Since its founding in 1900, the Club Za starou Prahu has developed a comprehensive idea of the appearance of Prague. What were the connections and conditions for the gradual evolution of this vision? Who and what influenced it? And what is this vision today?

4. Lecture: "The City Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow"
May 19, 2014, Monday, from 6:00 PM at the Gallery Jaroslav Fragner (Betlémské náměstí 169/5a, Prague 1)
Speaker: Ing. arch. Vlado Milunić
Abstract: Vlado Milunić, a veteran of creating healthy, inspirational, and for some, provocative urbanism, will present his life experiences. How has the city evolved since the 1950s, and how is it evolving now? What is its future? The shining city of the 21st century.

5. Lecture: "Is Urbanism a Public Matter?"
June 9, 2014, Monday, from 6:00 PM at the Gallery Jaroslav Fragner (Betlémské náměstí 169/5a, Prague 1)
Speaker: MgA. Lucie Doleželová, Ph.D.
Abstract: Several examples of urban regenerations will illustrate the development of urban management. We will reflect on whether good urbanism makes a good architectural design or management of the entire process, and what role investments and legislation play in it.

6. Lecture: "The Eco-Capital Freiburg - An Ecological Model City"
September 29, 2014, Monday, from 6:00 PM at the Gallery Jaroslav Fragner (Betlémské náměstí 169/5a, Prague 1)
Speaker: Dipl. Ing. Jakob Hurrle
Abstract: An unusual coalition of radicals, students, and farmers became the driving force behind the German ecological movement, which was initiated by the fight against the construction of a nuclear power plant in the village of Whyl near Freiburg. This and many other conflicts in the 1970s and 1980s deeply changed the social climate of the region, and people began to strongly identify with ecological principles. This development also influenced the principles of urban planning in Freiburg, which today presents itself as a model ecological city (car-free neighborhoods, highly efficient public transport system) with strong participatory traditions.

7. Lecture: "The Growth of Prague: An Alternative Approach"
October 20, 2014, Monday, from 6:00 PM at the Gallery Jaroslav Fragner (Betlémské náměstí 169/5a, Prague 1)
Speaker: Alberto di Stefano
Abstract: As an alternative to the attempt to satisfy growing housing needs in Prague through a self-consuming model of new residential construction on undeveloped plots, Alberto di Stefano will present some of his projects and those of his colleagues, which are based on the conversion and new use of former industrial and agricultural complexes, both in the city and its surroundings. Ecological efforts to preserve undeveloped land go hand in hand with the rescue of amazing unused architectural complexes and brownfields. The results will prove relevant both from an urbanistic and social perspective.

8. Lecture: "The Stony City"
November 10, 2014, Monday, from 6:00 PM at the Gallery Jaroslav Fragner (Betlémské náměstí 169/5a, Prague 1)
Speaker: Ing. arch. Jaroslav Zima
Abstract: Jaroslav Zima will tell a dramatic story about the Vltava General Plan, an unrealized project from his DA studio in 1994. This project is still the only post-war proposal for comprehensive development of Prague in the spirit of the traditional city. The authors of the General Plan will present their vision of Prague's urbanism after 20 years of efforts to realize it. Why does such an obvious image of the city as a city encounter resistance and misunderstanding?

9. Lecture: "Urban Space After the End of Modernism"
December 8, 2014, Monday, from 6:00 PM at the Gallery Jaroslav Fragner (Betlémské náměstí 169/5a, Prague 1)
Speaker: Ing. arch. Martin Kloda
Abstract: In the past, cities were founded, developed, and vanished based on the logic of social and natural conditions. Through a gradual centennial development, they reached viable structures that we adore and value to this day. The speed at which the world changes due to industrial and technical revolution is too fast for societies to accept and absorb such changes. Throughout the century, modernism directed this new order. What will cities look like after its end?
