Czech prisons draw attention in European comparison for one negative aspect: a high rate of recidivism. Up to 70% of previously convicted individuals return to prison. The concept of "open prison" emerged in Europe a hundred years ago. It is a facility where individuals are serving their sentences, but at the same time, they are gradually learning to reintegrate into society. The recidivism rate in these facilities is only 10%.
What does an open prison look like? And where do such facilities operate? And for whom? And why do we have only one in the Czech Republic? Is architecture in prisons important? Should prisons be designed by architects?
We will discuss these questions with Mgr. A. Dr. techn. Andrea Seelich and JUDr. Robert Pelikán, Ph.D.
Where does architecture begin and end? This question was posed by the organization Architects Without Borders, resulting in the project of discussion evenings called Boundaries of Architecture, which aims to bring architects and experts from other professions to the same table. The discussion evenings of Boundaries of Architecture are open to both professional and lay audiences. Audience participation in the discussion, whether through questions or opinions, is welcome.
