The DOX Center for Contemporary Art has prepared a series of programs for February on industrial heritage. Industrial architecture, which has gained popularity thanks to the efforts of professionals to popularize it and its use in significant development projects, is inseparably linked to the expression of the Center's building. An exhibition of photographs will showcase the transformation of the industrial complex into a center for contemporary art. The exhibition will run from February 4 to April 4, and a series of lectures on industry and culture, which is part of the regular accompanying events of Café DOX, will take place every Monday from February 5 to March 2.
The February lectures and presentations will introduce visitors to topics such as the urban and architectural development of Holešovice, industrial monuments in Holešovice, Prague, and the surrounding area, as well as trends in the repurposing of industrial spaces for the display of contemporary art in both the Czech Republic and the world. Among the speakers are architect and architectural historian Zdeněk Lukeš and Eva Dvořáková from the National Heritage Institute.
“The topic of industrial heritage has become attractive to the Czech cultural public particularly in the last ten years. Concurrently, industrial architecture has become a tool for the individualization of spaces and places, thereby increasing its economic value”, explains Benjamin Fragner, head of the Research Center for Industrial Heritage at CTU and one of the speakers.
The DOX Center itself grew on the site of factories from the late 19th century, and the industrial heritage is well reflected in the architecture of the gallery. Lectures and discussions on industrial architecture and urbanism are part of the regular accompanying program called Café DOX.
“The attendance at the accompanying programs has exceeded our expectations. In order to meet visitors’ interest in the most attractive meetings with artists and architects, we had to operationally make the café's adjoining spaces accessible for capacity reasons”, assesses the accompanying program the center's director Leoš Válka.
The DOX Center for Contemporary Art opened on October 19 of last year with the inaugural exhibition Welcome to Capitalism! It will run until February 8.
The patronage of the February Café DOX program has been taken over by Marek Ječmének, the mayor of the Prague 7 district.
